Ekko Shortlist Awards 2024: Animation Nominees Revealed

The Ekko Shortlist Awards are back, celebrating the best short films to have graced Denmark’s unique interactive streaming platform over the past year.

The event, now in its 11th edition, is one of the most significant showcases of Danish filmmaking talent, providing a springboard for both emerging creators and established professionals experimenting in the short film format.

Each year, filmmakers compete in 14 categories, ranging from Best Fiction to Audience Favorite, and one of the most exciting categories is Animation. This category shines a spotlight on storytelling through vivid visuals and imaginative concepts, often pushing creative boundaries.

The Animation Category: A Diverse Lineup

This year’s nominees for Best Animation include five films that reflect the diversity and strength of the animation genre in Denmark. From satirical takes on societal issues to deeply personal narratives, the range of topics and styles is as varied as it is impressive.

 

Nominees for Best Animation:

1. Freelance

Directed by Luciano A. Muñoz Sessarego, Magnus Igland Møller, and Peter Smith A knight embarks on a mysterious journey, guided by enigmatic instructions. The film explores themes of trust and purpose through intricate animation and storytelling.

2. Let Them Eat Cake

Directed by Mathias Rodrigues Bjerre A sharp satire about capitalism’s excesses, this film uses animation to explore how greed and indulgence can have unforeseen consequences.

3. Lulus Prikker

Directed by Snobar Avani This poignant tale follows Lulu, whose polka-dot dress begins to lose its dots. The film is a touching exploration of identity, transformation, and resilience.

4. The House Atop the City

Directed by Oliver Holm Jarnbye A solitary figure lives in a peculiar house, which begins to take on a life of its own. This eerie and atmospheric animation blurs the line between human and environment.

5. The TOBOS

Directed by Tobias Rud Something is not quite right with Bean-TOBOS. This film delves into themes of internal conflict and the search for balance through striking visuals and a surreal narrative.

How to Vote

The winners of the Ekko Shortlist Awards are determined through a combination of audience votes and jury deliberation. Voting is an integral part of the process, giving film fans a direct say in which works are recognized.
