Denmark Goes to Bordeaux for Cartoon Movie

WeAnimate 2024-02-26 | wam#0030

Since 1999, Cartoon Movie has supported over 450 animated features, awarding €3B in financing. Some of Cartoon Movie’s most notable successes include Flee, Ernest & Celestine, Niko & the Way to the Stars, Shaun the Sheep, The Breadwinner, Loving Vincent, and more.

While the heart of the event is the pitching forum, Cartoon Movie also provides valuable networking opportunities, allowing filmmakers to meet distributors and sales agents from around the world.

The goal of the event is to give newcomers the same opportunities as famous filmmakers, and start new success stories of their own. This year’s Cartoon Movie features a spotlight on publishing, highlighting the close relationship between books and movies, and offering opportunities to connect with publishers and rights holders from around the world.

This year, a number of exciting Danish projects will be pitching at Cartoon Movie. We are especially excited to follow the progress of these films:

Super Charlie

Directed by Jon Holmberg
Co-produced by Nordisk Film Production, A. Film Production, and Slugger Film

Speaking of films based on books, Super Charlie is based on the bestselling children’s book series by Swedish author Camilla Läckberg.

This 3D animated family feature tells the story of a baby with special powers, and his older brother who aspires to be a hero, teaming up to save the city from a supervillain.

Although the film is not scheduled for release until December 2024, it is receiving a lot of attention due to the success of the author and the powerhouse production team, including Jon Holmberg (Sune vs. Sune), Oscar-nominated Karsten Kiilerich, and industry legend Stine Buhl. It has already been sold for distribution to the UK’s Kaleidoscope, Vietnam’s Blue Lantern, and Estin Film and MCF Megacom in Europe.

The Great North Adventure

Directed by Mehdi Avaz and Christian Kuntz
Co-produced by Rocket Road Pictures and Kuntz Animation

The Great North Adventure is a 3D feature film inspired by the real life story of Danish explorer Jens Munk’s and his royal expedition to find the Northwest Passage.

Director Mehdi Avaz and Rocket Road Pictures made a splash in 2018 with While We Live, nominated for five Danish Film Academy Awards.

Co-director Christian Kuntz has been a 2D animator for decades, working on some of the biggest animated projects in the Nordics.

When Mumbo Jumbo Grew Giant

Directed by Karsten Kiilerich
Produced by A. Film Production

When Mumbo Jumbo Grew Giant is based on the bestselling children’s book by iconic Danish author and cartoonist Jakob Martin Strid, recipient of the Danish Crown Prince Couple’s Culture Prize.

In this 3D children’s film, hippo Mumbo Jumbo tastes a mushroom that makes him grow so large he can’t fit into his ordinary life. He and his friends embark on an epic quest to return him to his regular size, meeting a variety of characters along the way.

Featuring the talents of incredibly prolific Karsten Kiilerich, the film has already received support from the Danish Film Institute, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, the West Danish Film Fund, DR, and Nordisk Film Distribution.

This year’s Cartoon Movie features a huge range of animated projects in all stages of development, in all genres, for all audiences. The theme of the relationship between books and movies is especially notable in these projects from Denmark. We wish all the pitches great success, and look for the next phase of these incredible Danish animated films in the coming months.
